Ages 16 & Up

Combine two disciplines into one great project. Week one in Metal working, week 2 is Woodworking. Make a live edge slab bench for your home or garden. This bench will have a native hardwood top, and a welded base bottom. In the first week, we will learn the basics of welding. Jim Bundshuh from the metal sculpture shop at the ACA will help students create a steel base for their bench. In week two we will head to the woodworking department and learn some basic woodworking and finishing techniques to make our top perfect.

Ages 14 & Up

Learn how to bend wood to practically any shape with heat and moisture. This is a 2 session class where students will learn how the principles of manipulating wood into almost any shape. Students will learn various techniques of bending, so they may find a solution that works best for them. Students will finish up the class by completing a Shaker bent box that they will take home.

No tools or experience required. High quality tools will be provided. Students will be allowed open studio time on Sunday during the weeks of the class. On this day students are welcome to use the shop and tools to catch up or refine the classroom project.

$200 Tuition + $200 Materials

Ages 16 & Up

Learn the foundations of all woodworking. box making, bachelor’s chests, dressers, humidors, and kitchen cabinets. Boxes come in many different forms. Student will walk away with the skills and confidence to build many different boxes. Students will learn to use a variety of hand planes including a Jack plane, a rabbet plane, a router plane, and will learn to use a chisel. Take your woodworking skills to the next level. Students will be provided with (2) high quality hinges and (1) lock and keys from Horton Brasses located in Cromwell, CT U.S.A. No tools or experience is required. High quality tools will be provided.
Students will be allowed open studio time on Sundays during the week of the class. On this day students are welcome to come to the shop and use the tools and catch up and refine on the classroom project.

Make a Windsor Stool

Join me for 3 days of woodworking fun. Learn the principles of "Windsor Technology" while making a Windsor stool. 

Learn how to split or rive usable lumber from logs. Participants will shape the parts using a drawknife, spokeshave, and a shave horse. The legs will be steam bent and set aside to dry while other parts are being made. Students will learn to carve the seat using traditional seat carving techniques. On the final day of class student will assemble the stool and we will talk about different finishing methods.

The shaving horse is basically a very fast, foot operated vise that is utilized by a broad range of craftsman including wood turners, bodgers, coopers, chair makers, shingle makers and many other traditional trades. With traditional woodworking rapidly gaining popularity, people are using drawknives and spoke shaves to make chairs, paddles, snowshoes, splint basket parts, walking sticks, and many other great items. The shaving horse is essential when using a drawknife or spokeshave to shape wood into finished parts for your project. Using provided lumber, you will build your own shave horse.

Display your Guns with pride with a gun rack you made yourself. We will use a Native Hardwood to craft this gun rack that will display 3 guns. Also includes two shelves for ammo and accessories. Rack will be lined with leather so help protect those values guns.

We will heat treat our blade in gas forge. In the second session students will handle their blade with some of our beautiful pieces of timber.

Make a Tool Box for Teens

One Day Workshop

Ages 10 - 16 years

Learn the basics of woodworking joinery, including rabbets and grooves. Learn how to plan, measure and cut accurately, making parts fit together. Learn to use the carcass saw, bench chisel, rabbet plane, router plane, jack plane and smoothing plane. 

Build a great tool box to store tools, projects, garden tools, crafts, etc. A great gift for family or friends. This project will take the information and skills you learn in class to enhance your ability in the woodworking process. This class was designed for young adults in mind, but is open to anyone. Students will take home a pine Tool box.

No tools or experience will be required. High quality tools will be provided. Students will be allowed open studio time on Sunday during the weeks of the class. On this day students are welcome to use the shop and tools to catch up or refine the classroom project.

DESCRIPTION OF CLASS: Students will join me for a 6 week long course, and learn the principle of making a Turned tripod table. Students will learn how to turn a spindle on the lathe with just a few chisels. Students will turn a pedestal base from a premade design or a design of their own. They will make three nicely curved feet and join them to the pedestal with a tapered sliding dovetail joint. Students will have the option to make a round top or a rectangular top. Students will take home a Tripod table at the end of class.
Students will learn how to use a lathe, and how to cut a sliding dovetail joint. Students will make a hand planed cherry top. Students will learn to use the dovetail saw, chisel, router plane, jack plane, and smoothing plane.
No tools or experience will be required. High quality tools will be provided. Students will be allowed open studio time on Sundays during the week of the class. On this day Students are Welcome to come to the shop and use the tools and catch up and refine on the classroom project.

Make your own Custom deer antler Plaque. You supply your own set of antlers and then you will make a custom wood plaque in the Woodshop. Choose from Walnut, Maple, or Cherry wood. Shape that wood into a customized shape with your choice of edge detail. Students can make their own shape, or choose from a in house pattern. (we have Michigan Mitten, Superman, Diamond, oval, and Many others….)

Join Windsor Chair Maker Luke Barnett for a 2 session class on wooden spoon carving. Students will use only a few tools and a piece of firewood or wind fallen branch and leave with something you can use every day. Tools will be provided by the instructor. Students are also welcome to bring their own tools. Students will use a hatchet, fixed blade knife and a hook knife. Extra tools and materials can be purchased at the time of the class for very little cost. This is the perfect intro class for sculptural woodworking.

Ever wanted to make something that you can pass down to your family for generations? Are you interested in learning woodworking? Join us for this five-day class and learn all about chair making. Upon completion, take home an iconic piece of American furniture, built with your own two hands. 

Students will start with a log and learn the traditional chair making process. We will split and rive usable materials from a log. We will hand carve the seat and steam bend the back and crest piece. We will learn to split and shave spindles with the drawknife. Students will learn the most efficient way to build Windsor chairs using tools like the wedge, hatchet, froe, drawknife and spoke shave, - leaving at the end of the week with an iconic piece of American furniture. Choose to make either the balloon back or fan back chairs. The legs are provided or students may turn their own before the class with instructor provided patterns.
